Does a pressure cooker need to vent steam a little bit?!

Question: Does a pressure cooker need to vent steam a little bit!?
I recently purchased a pressure cooker and it works great but just wondering if this is normal!. when I bring it up to pressure, this little vent thing pops up, but before it does, lots of steam comes out, then after the thing pops up, I turn the heat down!. In the meantime, a bit of water sputters out of the vent, then it calms down, and a little steam comes out while its a pressure!.

Is this how yours works or should I return this thing!. I'm a bit confused!. Everything has cooked fine so far!. I've made stock and beans!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
It is normal, but if there is a lot of watersputtering, you may have too much water!.
It always pays to go over the instuctions, just in case your one has differnt instructions to other brands!.
With so many on the market, it is difficult to be 100% correct!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yep, it needs to let out a little steam, through a pressure valve!. If it didn't, it would explode from the pressure!.
