Turkey Disaster, I turned off the oven instead of setting the timer.?!
I preheated the oven to 500 then put the turkey in and was supposed to reduce the temperature to 350 and cook for 4 and a half hours!. Instead of setting the timer, I somehow turned the oven off!. Is it still safe to cook this turkey!? I plan to cook it for 4 hours, since it was already in the oven whilst it cooled down!. Any advice!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think you'll be fine!. So long as you cook it continuously for the recommended time the bacteria will be eliminated!. And don't worry about ruining Thanksgiving or any of that nonsense, it's these kinds of things you'll look back on and laugh about!. I blame the oven, lol!.
Pretty soon your house will be smelling like cooking turkey, kick back, watch a movie and look forward to the best thanksgiving supper ever!.

First off forget the 500 degree thing!. You are cooking a turkey not forging horseshoes!. 350 degrees is fine!.
Never cook poultry by time!. ALWAYS COOK BY TEMPERATURE!. Poultry is done when the internal temperature of the thigh is 180 degrees!. There are just too many variables (size, temperature of the bird when put in the oven, oven temps not exactly correct, etc!.) I have even seen people put turkeys in the oven with the inside of them still frozen and chunks of ice in the cavity!. The best way to keep check on the temperature is to purchase one of those thermometers that have a probe on a cable and the read-out is outside of the oven!. Place the probe in the thickest part of the thigh and watch the temp until 180 degrees is reached!. Take it out and let it rest at least 30 minutes before slicing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
