Whats with British people and cheese on toast?!

Question: Whats with British people and cheese on toast!?
Well i was listening to some of my british pop stuff (kate nash and lily Allen) and i realised that both artists have multiple songs that mention cheese on toast!. Is that a traditional food!?is it literally a slab of processed cheese on toast!?is it like a grilled cheese sandwich!? lol Www@FoodAQ@Com

Sosgez has the right idea!. If everybody had this for breakfast the world would be a much happier place!.

Grated or thin slices of cheese popped on a piece of toast and then grilled!. It has to be hard cheese though, soft stuff like brie is hopeless!. Make sure to cover the bread up to about 2mm from the edge or it will burn!.
Use plain white or wholemeal bread, at least medium sliced!. Fancy stuff like the black, German breads or granary types will detract from the taste, texture and sensation of the cheese!.

Sprinkle some Lea & Perrins and/or have a slice of tomato in the middle before grilling it too!.

A grilled cheese sandwich uses two slices of bread!. Unless you have a special toastie sandwich maker (similar to a waffle maker) you have to toast one side of each slice, put the cheese inside (toasted sides inwards) then pop the sandwich under the grill to toast the outside and melt the cheese (remember to turn it over)!.

Cheese on toast is just a single slice and is best eaten with a knife and fork unless you use very thick bread that won't decant the topping over your shoes!.

If you mix the cheese in a saucepan with eggs into a sort of runny cheesy scrambled egg then spread that over the toast before grilling you get Welsh Rarebit!. Yummy!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

hmmm, well I wouldn't say that Kate Nash or Lily Allen are particularly representative of Brits!. We do like cheese on toast, but not that much!

And no, we don't use processed cheese!.!.!.it can be made by grilling one side of a couple of bits of bread, then turning them over, putting slices of cheese (normally cheddar) on, and then grilling until it melts!. You can also add a bit of Worcestershire sauce to it!. Alternatively you can use a toastie maker, put in 2 slices of bread with cheese in the middle, and then it makes it into a toastie!.

If we carry on eating cheese on toast, eventually there will be no war and everyone all over the world will live in harmony!.

It's just cheese that's melted onto a slice of toast!. Not a slab, grated is best!. Even better than cheese on toast, is cheesy beans (baked beans on toast with cheese melted on top)!. Unfortunately, cheesy beans has no effect on the current economic crisis and illegal immigration is still rife!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's a grilled cheese sandwich!.One of the many toasted delights in English cooking!.It's up there with beans on toast ( preferably Heinz 57 baked beans)!.The toast thing is a hangover from the days when we came back from school for afternoon tea which for most kids consisted of a cup of tea and toast and jam !.We like toast so much that there was a one hit wonder song high in the charts a couple of decades ago simply called "Toast" !.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A decent "Cheese on toast" consists of slices of mature Cheddar (NOT processed!) cheese placed on lightly toasted bread and then placed under a grill until the cheese is bubbling and melted!. Sometimes a dash or three of Worcestershire Sauce is added and sometimes some English mustard is smeared over the cheese prior to grilling it!.
It is thus neither a toasted sandwich nor does it use anything but good cheese!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The choice of cheese is your personal preference, if a slab of processed is your thing, them so be it! Me I like some austrian smoked cheeses or plain old traditional cheddar, someone here has already expressed their preference for Brown sauce (I hope its HP or Daddies brands as nothing else is acceptable!) Me I sometimes use heinz ketchup or a dash of Wocester sauce!. You are correct in saying it is grilled cheese on a piece of bread, please try it!Www@FoodAQ@Com

In Great Britain, if you, "came home from hunting with out any game" you made, "Welsh Rarebit" or, "Welsh Rabbit" for supper!.
It is made of beer, cheese, & spices and is warmed up and served over toast!. There is also a recipe for, "Blushing Bunny" that is made of tomato sauce in place of the beer!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Its one of our favourite snacks!.And Processed cheese is definitely a No, No!.

Thick slices of Cheddar cheese placed on a slice of toast and grilled, then eaten in cut squares with Brown Sauce, Tomato Ketchup, or sprinkled with Worcestershire Sauce!.

Definitely not sandwiches toasted!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes it is a slab of cheese (not necessarily processed, could be Cheddar or whatever) on top of a slice of toast, put under the grill to brown!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Grated cheese is best, but a thin slice works well too!. It has to be melted under the grill!. I'd also need some brown sauce and a cup of rosy!.

If more people made cheese on toast there would be less street crime!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Brits would never use processed cheese, only real Cheddar or Colby!.
This is not unlike the American grilled (processed) cheese sandwich!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's a fad to relate to the most normal boring things in songs these days!.
But I still love cheese on toast!.
