Funny u ask!. I'm eating a slice of pie I made form "semi" scratch!. Used a can!.
Today from scratch isn't what it used to be!. Now people don't have time so they take as many short cuts as possible!.
In your question you can go even further and say is buying a pumpkin from a store a short cut!. Maybe it has to be grown in your garden to be truly from scratch!. Or since you bought the milk in a container!.!.!. well that's wasn't from scratch either!. :)
I think if you make the crust and the filling even if it means buying a can of pumpkin, gallon of milk or already laid chicken eggs from the store!.!.!. should still be considered from scratch, and a beautiful thing, since today everyone buys their food fully prepared!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I think it is 'from scratch' if you use canned pumpkin!.
Here's why:
What does it take to be 'from scratch' in the first place!?
Do I have to grind my own wheat to make the flour in the crust!?
Do I have to milk a cow and churn the butter!?
Do I have to raise the chickens and fetch the eggs!?
Do I have to grind my own spices!? (Do cinnamon trees grow in North America!?)
These things come already 'made' for you to use in recipes!.
No different that using 'canned' pumpkin!. I don't want to go through the time and hassle of baking a scooping out a pumpkin!. So I buy it in a can, where someone has done that part for me!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, in my 40 years of cooking from scratch as well as mixes I consider this pie to be made from scratch!.
Pumpkin in a can is real pumpkin!. Using pumpkin from a can not only insures you high quality pumpkin but tasty!. I don't think it is cheating to use your time wisely!. Now this is only my own thoughts!. I would never want to take away from anyone who goes the extra mile to make their dinner special!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes!. It's a lot like saying Fruit Cocktail Cake is semi-homemade or for that matter anything using a basic canned or frozen ingredient as semi-homemade!.
Now if you were to purchase frozen spinach souffle and doctor it up that would be semi-homemade as the spinach is not a basic cooking ingredient!.
There is a difference even if a slight one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I consider it from scratch when using the tinned pumpkin that you have to add your own spices to, but not when you buy the pumpkin with the sweeteners already added in the tim!.
also I think that using a pre-made crust makes it semi homemade!. Homemade crust makes it for scratch for me!.

It really doesn't matter, as long as it tastes good!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
