Can I use baking soda instead of baking powder?!

Question: Can I use baking soda instead of baking powder!?
I'm just going to make some sugar cookies for the holidays!. I'm babysitting tomorrow and thought it'd be fun to make some and let the kid decorate them!. Here's the recipe I found:
http://www!.mahalo!.com/How_to_Make_Sugar_!.!.!.
I'm no baking expert!. :p

It calls for baking powder and I only have baking soda at home!. Will it make a huge difference if I substitute!? Please don't tell me it'll give everyone cancer in seventy years!. I just want to know if it'll make them taste funny!. Thanks in advance!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
If you have cream of tartar, you can mix two parts cream of tartar and one part baking soda to make baking powder!.

Baking soda is a base and it needs and acid to react!. Cream of tartar is an acid!. So once they are mixed with a liquid they are able to react with each other!. That's why baking powder is able to react to just water (it is both an acid and a base mixed together) and baking soda needs something like vinegar or lemon juice to react!.

If you don't have cream of tartar at home, mix in a bit of some sort of acid with the cookies, a squeeze or splash of lemon juice with the milk, or even just swap out a little of the white sugar with brown sugar!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you can′t change them because baking powder is baking soda and something else that when combined with liquid produce gas to make your baked goods rise!.

baking powder=baking soda and something else
baking soda=just bicarbonate of soda/sodiumWww@FoodAQ@Com

no they are different because i didn't know that and i made something and it was like really messed up and then my mom was like did you use enough baking soda!? im like yeah wait i used the baking powder! oopsWww@FoodAQ@Com

They are different!. I once mixed the two up and completely ruined my cooking, so make sure you go and buy the baking soda unless you want them to taste badWww@FoodAQ@Com

no your cookies will not rise without baking powderWww@FoodAQ@Com
