To feel a real sense of accomplishment that will give you confidence as a cook, start with a meal that has several dishes, but where each dish has few ingredients and few steps!. For example, this is a pretty balanced meal that includes all the food groups:
cheeseburger with baked potato, salad, and cinnamon apple slices
First, wash a potato!. With a knife, cut two crosses into the skin, one on each side!. The cuts should be shallow, just enough to break the skin and let steam escape!. Put it in the oven at 400 degrees, and it will be ready in 30 minutes!.
About 10 minutes after you put in the potato, make your cheeseburger:
Take a handful of raw hamburger and pat it gently into a patty!. If you like your burgers especially juicy, make it a little on the thick side; if you like it a little crunchy on the outside, go with thin!. Cook in a frying pan over low heat, turning every 5 minutes or so until it is as done as you like!. You can cut a little into it to peek inside and see if there is still any pink!. When it is mostly done, put a slice of cheese on top!. Pour a small amount of water into the pan (maybe 1/8 of a cup), being careful of the steam that will rise!. Immediately after adding water, put the lid on the pan and let it steam for 2-3 minutes to melt the cheese!. Serve on bread or a bun with your favorite burger toppings!.
Sometime while your burger is cooking, make your salad: Wash several leaves of lettuce and rip them into bite-size pieces!. You may use cabbage leaves in addition to or instead of the lettuce!. Then, wash and slice any raw vegetables you would like on your salad: tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, etc!. Top with your favorite salad dressing and maybe some crumbled cheese!.
For dessert, combine 3 spoonfuls of sugar with 1/2 spoonful of cinnamon!. Wash and slice an apple!. Roll each slice in the sugar/cinnamon mixture!.
When you've prepared the rest of your meal, check and see if the potato is done by poking it with a fork!. The fork should go in easily!. When it is done, remove it with a clean potholder!. Slice it open and mash the inside part with your fork!. Mix in whatever toppings you like, such as butter, salt, pepper, crumbled cheese, and/or sour cream!. (Personally, I prefer plain white yogurt to sour cream!.)
Easy, and yet somehow luxurious!
EDIT TO WONDER:
What is with all these "thumbs downs"!? As far as a I can tell, everybody has suggested something perfectly reasonable for a beginner to try to cook, and every single one has gotten at least one thumbs down!Www@FoodAQ@Com

you can make grilled cheese by using a pan buttered and cheese with bead between two slices of bread and that will melt the cheese and if you like you can add ham and or turkey to the sandwich deli meat style and serve next to a can of tomato sauce its not hard to cook not at allWww@FoodAQ@Com

They say cooking is an art and baking a science, if you aim to bake follow recipes to the letter, if you intend to cook then variety is the spice of life!.
I enjoy cooking chinese, its simple to prepare and you can experiment with different sauces etc!.
Sweet and sour chicken for example is easy enough, lots of recipes for it, the sauce is basically pineapple juice, vinegar, tomato puree and honey - then you thicken it with some cornflour!.
Probably about 300ml of juice, a tablespoon of vinegar, honey and puree, warm gently until simmering, mix some cornflour with water and stir a spoonful at a time in until you get a smooth sauce (make sure you taste it and adjust to taste ), once OK then let it cool!.
The chicken is also easy, recipes vary but we coat the chicken in either a pure cornflour (very crispy and dry batter), 1/2 flour and 1/2 cornflour (more fluffy and crunchy batter), or dip in egg and dip in the flour mix for more texture!. deep fry in small batches until crisp and golden!.
Normally I stir fry some vegetables (onions, mushroom, very fine sliced cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts etc) put the cooked chicken in once they are all cooked and throw the sauce on then serve with rice and prawn crackers!.
We often make a big wok of vegetables, then divide it up and put oyster sauce on some, sweet and sour on another, chow mein etc etc!.
If you keep some chicken without batter you can easily fry that and add to make chicken chow mein!.
I find the speed and simplicity of cooking chinese food makes it great fun to experiment and get bolder!.
Recently I made triple boiled pot sticker dumplings with a pork and vegetable filling ! Www@FoodAQ@Com

when i first started cooking, my dad taught me how to make chicken!. Just get a chicken breast, wash it, chop it into small pieces!. Then mix it in a bowl with some cornstarch mixed with some water and rub it over to make it soft!. Throw it in a nonstick pan with some oil and add pepper until it changes from pick to white!. If you're not sure if it's done, after a few minutes, take one while it is cooking and cut it in half to see if there are any raw parts!.
I would throw them back in the pan if I saw any raw parts inside!.
Then eat with rice!.
For some flavor, cook it with some oyster sauce!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
