You should always use an all glass bowl when melting chocolate!.
Microwave it 30 seconds at a time on 50% power and stir in between each time, even if they haven't melted any!.
Repeat until they are all melted!.
Make sure you aren't leaving the spoon or anything in the microwave when you turn it on!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It has nothing to do with the chocolate chips!. It has to do with what ever sort of container you are using in the microwave!. I use measuring glass for melting stuff in the microwave!. Anything with metallic trim on it will spark!. Any sort of metal container will spark!.
remember chocolate chips do not look like they are melted until you stir them!. melt for 2 minutes, stir, melt for another minute stir, etc until it is all smooth!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

there might be something wrong w/ your microwave, or maybe your melting it for too many seconds!. if it doesnt melt/turn out the way you want, just use a double boiler!. you can boil water on a stove (just so its hot) and add another bowl on top of the pot, w/ the chips inside!. then stir until completely melted!!

It is easy to melt them in a double boiler too!. just take a pot of water and have it come to a simmer on the stove, then put your bowl of chocolate chips on top and stir!. They should melt pretty quickly, and it's a guarantee that they won't burn or cause lightening bolts! :DWww@FoodAQ@Com
