It depends on what cakes run in your local grocery store!. I'm like you, I would much rather enjoy a homemade cake any day then from a store!. My grandmother always told me that its easier to whisper in your husbands ear and blow gently in it twice when trying to get him to understand what you want!.!.!.!.Same applies here!.
NOW to answer your question

If the ingredients are in your pantry as staples, then you are utilizing your on hand budget items!. Then it would make practical sense to cook from scratch!.

A easy way to cut time and $$$ is to use a store bought cake, make your own filling and fruit to decorate!. You can mix cream cheese, xxx sugar & cool whip for a filler, Then using cherry or blueberry pie filling to decorate!.!.

Slice your cake in half set the bottom on your plate spread 1/2 cream cheese mixture on the bottom layer, use 1/2 can of your pie filling, place your top layer on, then the remaining cream cheese and drizzle the remaining pie filling on top!.!.!.!.refrigerate, no one will ever question if its store bought or homemade!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
