Do you really need a knife set or would a couple of knives do the job?!
Answers:
These are the 3 knives you need!. Get good ones and you'll pretty much be set for the rest of your life!.
1!. 8-10 inch chef's knife
2!. Paring knife
3!. Bread knife
If you do any of your own meat-cutting (like quartering chickens) add a bread knife to that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Big knife sets often contain some extra knives you don't really need, but they can still be a bargain compared to buying several individual knives!.
In my opinion, what most people need, in order of importance:
1!. a big "chef's knife" for chopping veggies!. Can also cut raw meat and poultry!. Can slice cooked meat, though a carving knife is better for roasts!.
2!. medium-sized paring knife!.
3!. long bread knife
4!. Carving knife (thin, long blade)
5!. Serrated medium sized knife (for slicing tomatoes)
6!. Boning knife
I do a lot of "gourmet" cooking and I got by for a long time with just a really good chef's knife, a bread knife, and a couple of decent paring knives!. If you have under $100 to spend, I would say get a good chef's knife and 1 paring knife!. The chef's knife can do almost everything well enough!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As a retired chef, when I was cooking full time and not just at home, I had many choices when it came and comes to knives for kitchen use!. When I graduated from HS my parents and grand parents bought me the full line of Henkle 4 star knives!. I still have them all and out of the 38 knives I use only 4 to 6 regularly!. The set (complete line) made a awesome gift but thats it!.
When people ask me about knives I ALWAYS tell them to buy individual pieces, no matter the brand!. The reason is if you dont use a knife then what good is it!? My wife has 2 different sets and only uses one knife from each set most often!. By going to a store that offers single knives you really do save money by not getting unecesary knives and you have what you want without spending more money because your set does not have that knife you need!. You really only need a 8" or 10" chefs knife, serated slicer (for breads and some meat carving), paring knife, and a meat cleaver (if you plan on cutting down large cuts of meats) and thats it no more!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Please don't buy a "knife set!." Buy a paring knife, a nine inch chef's knife and a six inch serrated bread knife!. Buy good ones!. If you find yourself doing alot of carving, wait three months and then decide if you need a carver!. If you're cutting your own meat and fish you will want to buy a fillet knife!. But only buy knives as you need them!. I've been a professional chef for over 35 years and own tons, but use three!.
PS buy a really good vegetable peeler, too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you're on a budget, it's better to have three really good knives than a whole set of crappy ones!. You're going to need at a bare minimum a good quality 7-9" chef's knife, an all-purpose straight-bladed one about 9-11" long, and a decent paring knife!. Those three will get you through most prep work!. Other ones like bread knives and boning knives are a nice addition, but spend the money on getting a good set of just those three above!. Most cookware stores should have 3-packs of those!. Go with a Henckles or Wusthof, and make sure they feel nice and heavy!. Make sure you never wash them in the dishwasher either - always do it by hand!.
Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

knives do different jobs!. If you never chop veggies, you don't need a french chef's knife!. If you never fillet fish, no need for a fillet knife!. If you pare fruit a lot, have a paring knife!.
You can probably do w/o the steak knives in a set!.
Set are the most economical way to buy knives if you need more than about 3 of them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have a regular chef knife!.!.!. (NEVER BUT NEVER RUN IT THRU THE DISHWASHER!!) The dishwasher will RUIN a sharp knife!. A brand new knife can become dull the first time you run it thru a dishwasher!.
If you can afford it, get a good sharp boning knife!.
Get a bunch of paring knives, you can buy like five of them in a package!. Buy a couple pkgs!.
Get good reasonably priced steak knives, not the cheap kind, but you don't have to buy the most expensive kind either!.
That ought to do it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If your a chef or studying to be a chef!. Yes, you do need a complete set of knife's because they serve different types of functions in the kitchen!. If you are a amateur cook or an individual you only need two or three to use for cooking purposes!. Hope this helps!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com
If you cook, then I'd say a good cleaver and filet knife would get you by!.
If you eat a lot of fancy bread, maybe get a cheap serrated bread knife from salvation army!. And some cheap Ginsu steak knives while you're at it!.
When money is an issue, no need to get a fancy knife set!. Maybe someone will give you one as a present, like a wedding present!. That's where we got our 5-knife set 20 years ago!.
EDIT: come to think of it, a Chef's knife would be better than a cleaver, unless you mostly cook asian food like us!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

For most people, you really only need two types:
A good sized chef's knife (I'm a petite girl and I love my 8" RH Forschner by Victorinox, try a 10" if you are a guy)
A paring knife (again, I have the Forschner and it's great)!.
This line of knives is popular and recommended by Cook's Illustrated ( I think that's who it was), and they're amazingly inexpensive!.

Get a set because it's depends on
what you're chopping, if it's big
than you need a bigger knife
or if it's small than you need a
smaller knife, it really just depends
on the angle you want to cut it
and how deep and whatnot!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have a few good knives!. They are more expensive but they are awesome and easy to keep sharp!. I do like the sets though for variety!. Bread knives, paring knives are knives that are usually included in a set that you might not get yourself but they can come in handy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I am an experienced home cook and a volunteer at a large community kitchen!. I use one knife!.
I also own a serrated bread knife that I use when slicing bread and tomatoes, but other than that, one 10" chef's knife does the job!.
If youre planning to do a lot of boning, you might use a boning knife - but I gave that stuff up years ago!.
No, you don't really need the set!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
