That's a great idea you have!. I might want to make one, too!.
It's basically free, needs no electricity, you don't have to refrigerate/freeze it and it keeps for like a year in a jar!
I looked up 'Good Eats' that answerer #1 offered but couldn't find anything about making a food dehydrator!.
Answerer #2 offered mother earth news, they have it!. Here is the link:

I live in the dessert and at the height of summer, when it gets to100 degrees and above outside with single digit humidity, the sun is my dehydrator!. I arrange the marinated beef strips single layer on shallow pans or baking sheets lined with aluminum foil!. The sun dries up the meat fast, a full afternoon is just what it takes!. But you have to brave the heat to turn the strips over to get the other side to dry too!. If you live where it stays humid, or you get lots of cloud cover, or you don't get as hot as it gets in the desert, this way is not for you!. Anyway, dehydrators are pretty cheap and they are good for drying fruits too!. And for convenience too, because you can make beef jerky anytime you want!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
is there a building recycling place near you!? one of those places thqt tears down houses and sells the parts!. Go buy a few window screens, preferably the nylon kind!. and a roll of cheesecloth!. put our jerky, vegies, whatever on the screens, put them out in the sun and breeze and cover with sheezecloth to keep the bugs off!. Or do the alton brown one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
