What's your favorite recipe?!

Question: What's your favorite recipe?
With the thought of impending marriage, I've realised that I'm not that great at cooking much besides romen noodles and speghetti. I've decided putting together a bunch of recipes that I think my new hubby will like but I'm looking for some more to add to the collection. Thanks for your help :)

I cook a lot and don't have just one favorite recipe.. I collect recipes from family and friends...I also get a lot of recipes on line...my mom taught me a lot when I was growing up..My first suggestion is to find a cookbook and go through it and find different things to try...The Best Recipe from Cooks Illustrated in a nice book...If you go to amazon.com and find a cookbook..you can by it used...so far the books I have bought from them are in very good condition and a heck of a lot cheaper...Another cookbook is Bittmann's How to Cook Everything....I don't know it..but have heard good things about it...

If your mother or your future mother-in-law are good cooks..watching and helping is a great way to learn...

Just remember one thing if nothing else...follow the recipe to the letter...Make sure you have all the ingredients you need before you start cooking...

Here is a site you might check out...http://www.myrecipes.com/

All the best to you........

Buy a container of chicken base, not bouillon, but base, yes it has MSG in it, show me anything that doesn't.

Chicken base goes a long way.
Recipes are for those who think they are great in a kitchen.

Salt, pepper, flour, baking soda, baking powder, yeast, and from there go buy what you want.
Water (liquid) is, but eggs are not needed, but good to have.
Matzo is a cracker (I'm not Jewish), but it's a basic start, and if you kill your yeast, you can always make some.

I suggest you get "The Joy of Cooking"
"Practical Baking"
Betty Crocker's red and white cross (picnic table cloth) book.
I was raised on the gold book, but Betty Crocker great.

Long line of chefs in the family, people laugh, but I like the fact that I can knead dough, and it comes out as a loaf people crave, it's all in understanding, it's a science, but easy if you really want to know.

I love Shepard's pie. I don't use a recipe so it's slightly different each time although the process is common.

The basic method is to cook some meat (usually ground beef), layer it on the bottom of a baking dish, add a layer of kernel corn (I just use a whole bag of frozen corn) and top with mashed potatoes. Bake at 375 for half an hour. You can't really screw up the baking because everything is already cooked so you are basically heating it up to the point where the top of potato layer starts to brown. I also make a gravy for it as well.

The two parts that are flexible as far as ingredients are the meat and the mashed potatoes. Here are some things I do (usually some subset of these ingredients):

Meat

brown some ground beef (drain fat)
add ground pork or ground sausage (drain fat)
season with spices like chili powder, tex mex seasoning, etc. or even a shepard's pie seasoning package
Worcestershire sauce
frozen peas
chopped onions
chopped garlic
some liquid like wine or beef stock
cornstarch and cold water to thicken if needed

Potatoes:

boiled yellow flesh potatoes in chunks
milk or cream
butter
pepper (salt if using no butter or unsalted butter)
shredded cheddar cheese
sour cream
garlic
mash it all up

Like my spaghetti sauce, chili, stews, etc., it's all freestyle.

Before you solicit recipes from Yahoo, which may give you ten answers from asian to Thai and back through Mexico do yourself a favor. Go to your local Barnes & Nobles, grab a cup of coffee and browse the cookbooks. Find one YOU are comfortable with that has dishes you think you can make as well as you'd like to eat. I happen to like Barefoot Contessa's (Ina Garten) new book, "How easy was that"! Then have some fun in the kitchen and ask hubby to join in. Remember, we've all been there and the marriage will survive a few bad meals. Have fun.

Dessert: Oodie Goodie Cake
1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick butter
1 egg
mix well and spread in a greased baking pan (cake pan)
then mix:
4 oz cream cheese
1 egg
2 cups powdered sugar
mix well and spread over the top of cake
bake @ 325' for about 25 minutes
It is a delicious dessert and so easy! Everytime I make it for a party or for my Husband, it vanishes quick!
