Why is my red velvet cupcake batter purple?!

Question: Why is my red velvet cupcake batter purple?
I'm making Crimson Velveteen cupcakes from Vegan cupcakes take over the World. But instead of your average food coloring, I used natural organic food coloring from Whole Foods, it's made from beet powder extract and hibiscus extract and looks blood red, but my batter is PURPLE!!!! (There was purple coloring at the store, this WAS supposed to be red coloring) Is this normal for red velvet cupcakes, or what's wrong????

You got the wrong kind of food coloring. Next time go artificial.

red food color is not vegan but beet powder and also hybiscus are not true red color look at a beet it is more toward purple and so is hybiscus also. for the best red use red food color but it is not vegan it comes from cotichanal bugs that make red tide. anyway for red velvet cake to be red leave the beet powder out.

The red you were hoping for is the red that comes from cheap food coloring in a bottle. You bought the vegany stuff, made from beets. You're going to get a beet-colored cake.

All bets are off w/ a vegan recipe. Just tell your Valentine your love is so great, it's not red, it's PURPLE!
