Good idea. Plan well in advance so there will be no problems.
Home made frosting requires it, it is the icing sugar that becomes the frosting for cupcakes or a cake. As for Cream of Tartar, you do not need any for frosting.
Here is an old recipe that my grandmother used to make. It is different nd does not use icing sugar. or Cream of Tartar
Boiled Icing Recipe
Take one cup of sugar to the beaten white of one egg. Put the sugar on to boil with two tablespoonfuls of water. When this has boiled clear pour on the beaten white of the egg, stirring constantly until cold. Flavor with rose water and vanilla mixed.
Hopefully this will help you out! This is more along the lines of how they made frosting 100+ years ago. If you have ever made a roux before, it will be very similar to that. Do not let it burn or darken as that is very easy to do! Hope this helps!

Do you have regular sugar? And a food processor? I've heard you can just process reg sugar to make powdered sugar... Never tried it but seen it mentioned in a lot of recipes. Good luck!
