Could i substitute something else for the shortening?!

Question: Could i substitute something else for the shortening?
I have this recipe for homemade frosting for sugar cookies and I made it before and it was great but now I am out of shortening. Do i absolutely need it or could i substitute it for something or just plain leave it out? Thanks in advance.

1/2 c. milk
3 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. "Spry" (shortening)
Vanilla (opt.)

Cook milk and flour until very thick. Let cool. Cream sugar together with butter and Spry. Add milk and flour mixture and beat until whipped cream consistency. Add vanilla. Will suit those who do like a "too sweet" frosting and may not have confectioners' sugar on hand.

Answers:

Just use more another 1/4 cup butter, so use a 1/2 butter altogether...

Use butter. Whenever recipes call for shortening i use butter, just beacause i think it tastes better. It will turn out great. Use margarine if you don't have butter

Ididn't know they still made Spry shortning. You can use margerine just as well as the shortning,or butter.
