I use olive oil to make all my cakes, no matter what kind of oil the recipe says and they are always moist and even if left out they don't get dry unless you don't put them in a serving tray (with a glass lid of course), but overnight they should always be put in the refrigerator.
Soak a clean tea towel in cold water and wring out some of the water but don't make it too dry.
Place a plate cover over the cakes - the type you use when someone is late for a meal. It is usually made of plastic and has air holes in it.
Cover this plate cover with the wet tea towel. This will keep cakes or sandwiches moist.
Don't do this when you have already cooled and iced your cakes. This method would make the icing wet again.
A great way to keep all baked goods soft and moist is to put white bread (like wonder bread) on top of the baked good (in your situation, cake). The moisture from the white bread is absorbed by the cake and helps to keep it soft! Also, put foil on top of the bread!
Couple of things come to mind:
1. Once they are cooled, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, then foil
2. Once cooled, frost with crumb coat
I think you may put it in a container with a room temperature.
