Does it take minutes or hours to cook a steak?!

Question: Does it take minutes or hours to cook a steak?
I know it's an odd question, but I've been a vegetarian (obviously a laid-back one) for 21 years and I usually cook chicken or fish for my boyfriend, not steak. So I have almost exactly zero clue. I know it's variable, but I'm hoping to get a ballpark figure, or at least a municipality figure-- because I might as well be a Martian where this is concerned. I guess it's about an inch to an inch and a half thick, but I'm not sure.

I'm going to pan-sear it first. How hot should I pan-sear? Too hot for olive pomace oil (which takes higher temperatures than extra-virgin, it can take almost as much heat as grapeseed)? If I need to go get some avocado seed oil, I have to go now.

Or, now that I think of it, does it not need oil because it's got fat?

Any thoughts on cast-iron vs. stainless for the pan? I don't have or use Teflon pans.

It's out of the fridge and coming up to room temperature now.

Cheers.

Steak needs to be room temperature. DO NOT RINSE. Take some paper towels and blot both sides of the steak so the surface is dry. Mix some cornstarch with salt and pepper and rub into each side of the steak. Use an iron skillet and high heat. Wait until the pan is very hot, add just a little (tablespoon or so) of olive oil. Put the steak into the pan and don't touch it for 5 minutes. Flip it over and continue to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. This should give you a steak with that nice crust, and a lot of flavor, on the rare side. I like mine really rare. If you want it more medium or well-done, you can continue with the skillet on top of the stove, or place it in a hot oven (500 degrees) for 3-4 more minutes. Good Luck Sweetie.

First let it to the room temperature for about 30-60 min. Then rinse it well with cold water. Put salt, pepper and other favorite spices on it (on both sides). Put a larger amount oil in frying pan (you can use stainless one). Heat it and put the steak in it. While frying turn it for both sides, and remove it when it will change the color (like becoming a little bit golden)
Ant that`s it :)

Pan broiling best on cast iron, really hot. A little oil only to prevent sticking. Preheat pan first, of course. Two minutes on each side. Increase that time depending on how well done you want it.

Under the broiler...takes just minutes... it depends on how you like your steak...and the thickness..about 7 minutes on the first side and 3 minutes on the other side...that is for medium...

Set oven on Broil......

Happy cooking..............

no pan spear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!… set oven to 375 pour Barbeque sauce over it cook for 30min-1hour or until >>slightly<< pink inside make a side of mac and cheese or a side salad

dont for get steak sices!

DO NOT PAN SEAR! Okay, now how does your boyfriend like his steak? If he likes it rare than broil on each side for about 6 min each, a minute more for med. rare, a minute more for med. etc. One thing is great is to saute mushrooms and onions for a topping for the steaks! Your guy is a luck one today! Please be sure to check the steak prior to serving, cut it near the bone and determine the color, the rest should be 2 or 3 shades lighter. IE if it is blood red then the rest should be pinker.
