Yes...

...and here's why:

A recent study at the University of Bern in Switzerland showed that consumption of 1 g dry onion per day for 4 weeks increased bone mineral content in rats by more than 17% and mineral density by more than 13% compared to animals fed a control diet. This data suggests onion consumption has the potential to decrease the incidences of osteoporosis.

Several studies have shown quercetin to have beneficial effects against many diseases and disorders including cataracts, cardiovascular disease as well as cancer of the breast, colon, ovarian, gastric, lung and bladder.

In addition to quercetin, onions contain the phytochemicals known as disulfides, trisulfides, cepaene, and vinyl dithiins. These compounds have a variety of health-functional properties, including anticancer and antimicrobial activities.

Onions are also a source of vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber and folic acid. They also contain calcium, iron and have a high protein quality (ratio of mg amino acid/gram protein). Onions are low in sodium and contain no fat.

To add to the excellent answer by Ladydi, I would say that onions are extremely good for you in that they are alkaline. We often have too much acid in our diets (from dairy, red meat, refined flour and other staple foods) and this imbalance contributes to many modern diseases (heart problems, arthritis, cancer and other degenerative diseases). By increasing alkaline foods, you help balance this excess and both onions and garlic can help - as well as adding flavour to everyday foods. Many foods commonly thought to be acidic such as lemons are in fact alkaline in the body and help redress the harmful effects of excess acid and sugar. Grapefruit, for instance, is alkaline.

Onions do contain some sugar (especially the sweeter varieties such as red onions) but this is negligible when compared to their other health benefits. Onions can help to thin the blood, preventing blood clots and their antimicrobial properties can help improve skin problems.

The benefits are higher if you eat onion raw. To make them more palatable (if you find the taste too strong), slice them as thinly as possible or chop into a very fine dice. Use a mandolin for paper thin slices. The finer or smaller they are cut, the more of their natural sugars will be released and this will dampen down the strong flavour and help them taste sweeter. Shallots are also delicious and often milder than white onions.

Onions are considered a health food by nutritionists and are a cheap way to obtain nutrients, particularly when eaten raw. Roasted onions make a wonderful side dish and French onion soup is a must for onion lovers and very easy to make.

Don't listen to dissenters who warn of bad breath from onion - simply chew fresh, raw parsley (including the stalk) and this will neutralise the odour of onion on your breath. Try the delicious Middle Eastern parsley salad called tabbouleh which is used in the Mediterranean too as a nutritious and tasty way of counterbalancing so-called onion breath.
