You certainly can if you melt it first. Another great way to make a box cake mix come out moist and taste more "homemade" is to replace the oil & water with 1 stick melted butter and one cup whole milk. It makes an incredible difference!

I use unsweetened apple sauce in lieu of oil in my homemade cake recipe. (I also use unsweetened apple sauce in lieu of butter and margarine as well. My recipes are already pretty healthy, as they are vegan and made with all whole wheat flour, but this makes them fat free, too.)



Melt it slowly and let it cool a bit and use that. However, I will tell you that melted butter is much better.



Replace the oil with butter and the water with milk
