How do you make a grilled cheese sandwich without a stove?!

butter the outside of the bread, place cheese between slices of bread, broil each side in toaster oven until golden and crispy.
Think about it - on the stove you have direct heat on one side of the sandwich at a time. You don't pre-toast anything. You need to duplicate the direct heat of the stove as best you can with your toaster oven. Here's how I do it - it sounds difficult but is actually very easy.
If you can move the rack up - put it as close to the top burner of the toaster oven as you can. If you can't move it - don't worry about it.
Butter your bread on the OUTSIDE with softened butter - construct your sandwich just like you would for the stove. Same kind of cheese you like, same quantity you're used to using, etc. You can use your microwave to soften the butter - or just leave a stick out at room temp. (Note - if your Mom buttered the inside of the bread next to the cheese -that's fine. We never did but that's personal pref. and also depends on how oily your cheese is)
Now you need to duplicate the direct heat of a fryng pan. You do that with tin foil "sleeve". Fold 2-3 layers of foil into an open-ended pouch that is 1" larger than your sandwich all the way around. - leaving one end totally open (steam needs to readily escape - do NOT wrap the sandwich tight in foil or it will not brown correclty).
Now slide the sandwich into your foil sleeve, making sure the foil is touching the buttered bread on both sides. Put the whole thing on the rack, and BROIL on HIGH until each the first side is golden and the cheese is melting. This will probably take quite a lot longer than a frying pan because the heat is not as direct, nor is a toaster oven burner all that great. But it will work - be patient. .
Using tongs - Flip the ENTIRE package over. the first toasted side should now be down and the "raw" side toward the upper burner of the toaster oven. Repeat the process until the sandwich is done to your liking.
What happens is the top burner of the toaster oven heats the foil to 450-500 degrees, which in turn acts like an upside-down frying pan. In my expereince over-heating won't be a problem - but if you have a really hot toaster oven you might have to watch it and turn it down a bit if the bread gets too dark before the cheese starts to melt.
DO NOT WALK AWAY while doing this - butter and hot toaster ovens are a potential kitchen fire - you have to keep an eye on things and use common sense.
With a little practice this technique produces a perfect "stove top" grilled cheese - without the stove.

Layer two slices Kraft Sharp Cheddar Process Cheese onto the bread.

toast the bread, both sides on the toaster over, put some butter and stick a slice of cheese in there. microwave for 10 sec.
