Are all cast iron skillets the same?!
Answers:
A well seasoned cast iron pan is the best for cooking so many foods .I have a very old pan and I use it very often the secret to a good pan is to season it well before first use by rubbing a non salted fat like Crisco then put it in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes then after every use wash in hot water no soap and with rub Crisco this will insure that your pan will not rust and it will build up a protective seal and food will not stick , I love mine
Some are thicker than others, but they are pretty much the same. If you can get an old one, you will be much happier than with a new one. They get better with age. Every time you use one, it tempers the iron to be a little bit better. Use it a thousand + times, and it is a very fine piece of cookery.
If you buy a new one, they often are dipped in wax to prevent rust, Burn or melt the wax off first before seasoning.
no ...first make sure its 100% cast iron and good quality and the heavier the better....
and some advice from me is once you buy it take it home fill it with salt and cook in at 500 degrees for as long as you can this basically ages the iron too make it as if it was very old and as we all know the older the iron the better the food ...at least an hour or two then dump the salt out and coat the inside with vegetable oil and put it away ....never clean it ...and if you half too clean it dont use soap or any other substances other than water...
as long as you make sure it has a light coat of oil on it at all times it wont rust and will treat you well for years to come=)
