What does "1 2/3 cup sugar" mean?!

Question: What does "1 2/3 cup sugar" mean?
My friends and I are making cupcakes 2mw...we're using a recipe that we found online. we all don't really bake that much so i don't really understand what some things in the reciple are saying. for the flour and sugar it says:

2 1/4 cups flour
1 2/3 cups sugar

for the flour..is it saying that we need to 2cups + 1/4cup of flour OR 1/4cup + 1/4 cup of flour
for the sugar..is it saying that we need 1cup + 2/3cup of sugar OR 2/3cup of sugar

heres the link for the recipe:http://www.beantownbaker.com/2010/04/ore…

it's 2 + 1/4 cups flour
and 1 + 2/3 cups sugar

my gf bakes all the time.

two cups plus one fourth cup flour
one cup plus two thirds cup sugar.

Rule of thumb, if ever you will never see ingredients that havent been averaged to the nearest amount, it wouldnt make sense. For example 2 and 1/4 cup will never be 9/4th cups. that would equal to 2 1/4 cups .

It means it needs 2 whole cups & 1/4 of a cup (that's for flour)
And its the same for the sugar 1 whole cup of sugar and the 2/3 of a cup

Hope I Helped =D

I bake all the time =D

it means 1 cup of sugar then an additional 2/3rds of a cup of sugar :)

this is nothing complicated...
what it means is that for the flour u need *2 cups* + *1/4*
the same for the sugar u need *1 cup* + *2/3*

it is saying you need 2 cups + 1/4 cup for the flour and 1 cup + 2/3 cup for the sugar

you need 2 and 1/4 cups of flour and 1 and 2/3 cups sugar.

yes 2 plus 1/4 if it was 2 1/4s they would just say 1/2 cup

It means "stay in school"

it means you should stay out of the kitchen before you hurt yourselves or poison someone !
I'm not kidding
