How to cook this when you're a novice chef?!

Question: How to cook this when you're a novice chef?
I'm not really a good cook at all. Most I can do is make eggs and pancakes, easy stuff. The rest is always either fast food or frozen stuff. My sister moved in with me recently and she's used to getting home cooking and hasn't had it since she came here before Christmas. She's acting weird so I'm guessing maybe she's missing home and I wanted to cook something for her from home. I know she likes Mac'N'Cheese, mashed potatoes & baked chicken but she likes it homemade.

How hard is all that to make?

Answers:

Most all of that is pretty easy, I'm a line cook by trade though. The Mac'N'Cheese is going to be the most difficult, as for the mashed potatoes and baked chicken, they are both easy. For the mashed potatoes, just peel your potatoes, cut them up, boil till soft, and drain. After this, add butter, and salt and pepper to taste, then mix in milk until you reach your desired consistency. Gravy is also pretty easy to do homemade, it just depends on the kind of gravy you want. As for the chicken, season with most anything (lemon pepper, Ms.Dash, etc). Invest in a meat thermometer, as a rule of thumb, at 160 degrees its safe, and your thermometer should come with instructions for safe serving temperatures. Also, invest in some cookbooks, witch will also have information on meat temperature, and give some simple gravy recipes for your potatoes. Back to the mac'n'cheese, there are a few different ways to do it, my advice would be to again invest in cook books (Better Homes and Gardens offer some great cookbooks for home style cooking) or check out www.foodnetwork.com or www.cooks.com. Good luck and happy cooking.

The internet is your goldmine of information. I always say, "if you can read, you can cook". Of course it helps to have some experience, but how do you get experience.... by DOING it.

All the things you mentioned, and many many more, have recipes and instructions available on the internet. It would help if you were to start watching cooking shows on TV. If you are in the States. there are cooking shows on all day long.

Good luck. Cooking is not that challenging, but is very rewarding.
