How to make good tasting mashed potato?!

Question: How to make good tasting mashed potato?
Whenever I make it, it comes out kinda bland. I've noticed putting a little milk, salt and pepper into it helps but are there any other tips out there?

Put butter in when mashing, along with milk, and pepper.

If you want luxurious mashed potatoes, use cream instead of milk. If you want healthier mashed potatoes, use a couple of tablespoons of low fat coffee mate. Sounds weird, but gives a really creamy taste without the calories!

Also, try paprika, mustard (not too much), or grated cheese to give variations on the mash.

Chopped up spring onions, or a bit of garlic are also nice.

If you're trying to make them quickly, add salt pepper, sour cream, maybe some parsley, also you can add an onion soup packet (the kind that is dry).

If you have more time, cut up some cauliflower in small bits, spray with olive oil spray and sprinkle with salt, add a couple cloves of garlic (not peeled) and roast until the cauliflower is soft and somewhat brown and the garlic is soft, meanwhile boil your potatoes and cut up some onion really small. Saute the onion until caramelized, drain potatoes, add roasted cauliflower, and onions, squeeze the roasted garlic from the clove and mash everything together. The cauliflower won't mash completely so it will be like lumpy mashed potatoes (the best kind anyway!) add butter and sour cream to the right consistency. YUMMMMM

Butter for sure! Also, for creamy potatoes warm the milk then put it in the potatoes. For a twist, add blue cheese crumbles. Garlic, seasoning salt, and olive oil can be added too. Some recipes use romano cheese with oregano.

When you get to the mashing bit, check there is enough salt in there. Add a good dollop of butter and really mash them until they drop off a spoon with a little shake. While they are still hot, add a couple of eggs and beat them in. The heat from the potatoes will cook the eggs so you wont get it lumpy. You can put this in a piping bag and decorate your shepherd's pie before browning it off ...

In fact most foods go with potatoes

When living on the border line with 2 children I found a lot of "my recipes" went down very well.

When the potatoes are boiling put in about 1-2 TBSP of salt. Or I just pour it in.. >.> The more the better.
Once the boilings over put in about 50 grams of butter, or more. Depends if you like butter or not.
And heaps of pepper. Pepper and salt give it the most flavour. :3
Then mash the potatoes till all the butter has melted.
Then pour in some milk. I like taking my anger out on the potatoes when mashing them.
After that you should have the smoothest, creamiest, tastiest mash potatoes. :D

Dad. I only like mash the way he makes it.. :P

Be Careful how much salt you add. Yes it does add flavour but we now eat it in so many other products that youd have to consider your overall diet to judge how much salt.

So my recipe is a knob of butter, splash of milk, lots of freshly ground pepper and yes a sprinkle of salt. Grated cheese in it is divine or some half fat creme friach (cant spell it right now!!) but that makes it break down to a creamy consistancy without the fat content. Also chopped up spring onions. And as for a huge dollop of wholegrain mustard with a bit of butter and milk, well!!! YUMMMM YUMMMM in my TUMMM.

Mash is fab and under rated. Experiment with all these ideas people have given you, Enjoy.

Add salt to taste while the potatos are in the pan boiling.
Once you've drained them, put some butter and double cream into a jug and melt in the microwave. 1min 20secs is usually enough time. Mash the tatties well to get all the lumps out, then add the melted butter and cream and beat well.
If you fancy something different you can have garlic mash or mustard mash, but the plain old butter and cream method works best for me.

Hi there. The number 1 rule is use a good potato like a king Edward, maris piper or a wilja.

boil till you can slide a sharp knife in easily but you don't want em to fall apart as this means they wil taste watery. add a knob of butter, a splash of milk or even single cream if you want it rich. also season with salt and pepper.

if you want to make it very special you can put an egg yolk or two in there as well.

I have been making mash potatoes in various different ways for 11 years. have fun.

me :)

lotsa butter/ or margarine
a bit of garlic powder to your mixture
a big spoon of sour cream a few min. before serving
blend in and melt some shredded cheddar or a big spoon or cheez whiz
i often do all of the above
-never tried this but i may because i love onion soup mix-try adding a pack in
could add chopped green pepper, canned drained mushrooms, can corn etc.

Put some butter into the potatoes when you boil them (Maris Piper) Dont cook them to long or looses the flavour and relises all the starch then leave to drain real well pass through a moulin and finish with double cream and salt, white pepper its all in the beating to get the smooth cream feeling :)

Butter is very important.
You may also want to consider adding some chives, and roasted garlic.

To roast the garlic, just peel a head of garlic, coat with a little olive oil. Wrap it up in foil, and toss in the oven for 30 minutes or so at 350. Toss the garlic in when you go to mash the potatoes.

I like to use half and half instead of milk then add butter, you can also put equl amounts of butter and cream cheese then salt and pepper. Another good one is to put a packet of ranch dressing mix in as well.

My favorite is:

Red skin potatoes (boiled and mashed with skin-on)
Heavy cream (not milk)
Butter
Salt
Pepper

Flavor to taste.

its not for the faint hearted but the best is butter not marg either full fat milk or cream
and this sounds strange but a little bit of sugar
and i use a potato ricer to get all the lumps out

Use a good quality potato, boil for only l5 minutes in lightly salted water, a good sized knob of butter and a splash of milk when mashing.

Don't mash too much so they stay fluffy... Good luck and happy cooking!
