How can you tell the expiration date of foods?!

Question: How can you tell the expiration date of foods?
On the cap of Ragu sauce it says OCT1612YU03 under best by date.

So what does that mean?

Answers:

october 16, 2012
this is NOT an expriation date though
this is a FRESHNESS date
used by companies to move old product of their shelves
canned/preserved foods are good for decades past any date on them, as long as they aren't exposed to extreme temperatures and are still sealed

You would have to contact the 800 number on the jar. It may mean that the expiration date is October 16, 2012; but that's not necessarily going to be true. Different companies use different types of codes to note the production date of their products.

Odds are, you are completely fine. Shelf stable foods (canned and jarred products) have very very long shelf life until they are opened. Relax and enjoy your spagetti! :)

october 16th 2012 i believe thats if its unopened) after you open it refrigerate it
