YES YES YES they are LoL, people just say they're not because they like to think that *real* Italian food is some kind of sacred institution that could never be replicated outside of italy.
The truth is that Italian has always been known for being simple and rustic. For using simple flavors to their best abilities.
So yeah, what you get in italian restaurants HERE is real italian food. A can of spaghetti-Os is "Americanized" Italian food.
You can even find real French food here, and French food is A LOT more difficult to make than Italian food, it has a reputation for being complicated.
As for Chinese food... it's MOSTLY real too, the difference is that the dishes we order here aren't everyday chinese food dishes, they're more like dishes that you would make for feasts or very special occasions, the average chinese meal generally consists of steamed vegetables and rice, with soy sauce.
It's sort of like if the Chinese thought we ate Thanksgiving dinner every single day.
Both. I live in the Chicago area and we have plenty of authentic Italian restaurants, though like Italy, it all depends on the region of the cooks. What we have as spaghetti in non-Italian restaurants and even some that bill themselves as 'Italian' are more American than authentic.
i think that mom and pop places use recipes from the old country, while olive garden, for instance, just combine several recipes into one dish.i'm old school and think simple is better.

Believe it or not there are still real italian food restrunts. But watch out for restrunts that are fast food chains. they might have authentic food but i would stick to locals like that opened their own restrunt and are actually from italy
