Use butter... not crisco... and add more vanilla for a more flavor..

It's hard to say what you did wrong without going through the recipe step by step but my honest guess is It may not be you, but the recipe. Wilton is known to have horrible tasting fondant and other types of frosting. I, personally, would never use any Wilton recipe or buy any Wilton goods. The farthest I would stretch would to buy some of their utensils like their piping bags. Just try a different recipe!! :) I get 95% of my recipes from allrecipes.com. If you've never heard of it or visited it, you'll be amazed. They have everything including hundreds of recipes reviews for almost every single recipe. No more guessing what you did wrong, because the recipe reviews will tell you if a certain tweak to the recipe makes for a better result. Hope I helped!!

Sometimes certain brands of powdered sugar have a different taste to them. But one thing that works for me is to let the icing sit for about 2 hours. Cover with Saran and the flavor will develop. Crisco is a much better choice for decorating because it will hold it's shape and it easier to work with. Also, use good quality vanilla.

yes- you are suppose to use butter it is my favorite and I start with soft butter and use a wire whip to incorporate the powered sugar and add the sugar until it has a very strong consistence and good taste- the blend of the both butter/sugar should have a very smooth and slightly buttery taste. but the key is the whip to blend together.

Hmm.... I read the recipe and you put in four cups of powered sugar. The sugar over powers the butter. Add only 3 Cups. Put in at least two sticks of butter. Make sure the butter is soft not liqiuid. Dont add the crisco just the two sticks of butter. If it is too soupy just add in small amounts of Powdered sugar at a time. Hope it helps.

this happen to me too it tasted like powdered sugar. but then i put it on my cake and i also put it in the refidgerator and it tasted better. it tasted like icing and not powderd sugar and crisco

Add a couple teaspoons of almond or vanilla extract.
