True, the best way to boil an egg, have it perfectly cooked and with no green muck on the yolk is to fill your pot with water, put in the eggs THEN start the heat. Bring to a boil and once it boils for about 1 minute turn off the heat and cover for 10-15 min. At that point plunge the eggs into a bowl of ice water. You want to cool them down quickly and fully because this helps the cooked egg white separate from the shell and this makes for REALLY easy pealing. Doesn't matter if the shell cracks, you are pealing them anyway. So then just peal and use how you wish, perfect every time, no green stuff either! :-)

I own a catering company.

Fill a pot with water, put them in there, heat it up, when it starts to boil/bubble (depending on the size of the pot), let them jump around for about ten minutes.

You can always pull one out, try and spin it, if it stays upright, it is close to, if not ready, time to remove them (if a shell cracks, signs are they are over done, not bad, just remove them at that point).

Run cold water into the pot till the water is cooled down, then run cold water over them (stop the internal heat from cooking them any further).
An egg shell will keep the heat in, that is it's purpose, to keep the baby warm.

The jumping around in the pot, the spin test, you should be good.

Never feel embarrassed to ask a question.
Eggs are not easy.

Nobody really tells you when to do what, they just expect you to know.

You'll be fine.
If it spins, it's ready.

For the perfect hard boiled egg... with none of that nasty green sulfur layer that some tend to get (means it's over cooked, but is ok to eat). Place your eggs in your pot, fill with plenty of water to generously cover. Bring to a rolling boil (this means that the water isn't just simmering, but really fully boiling). Turn off heat and cover. set a timer for 10 minutes. When it goes off, run cold tap water into the pan until the water is cool. Let sit for 5 minutes or so, the water will get hot due to the heat from the eggs, get the water cold again from the tap, once cool enough, refrigerate.

Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Use plenty of water because you don't want it to stop boiling when you add the egg(s). Put the egg(s) into the water. Do it gently so it doesn't hit the bottom of the pot and crack. Boil 3-4 minutes for a soft boiled egg with a runny yolk, 5-6 minutes for an almost hard yolk, 10 minutes for a hard boiled egg. Immediately remove the egg and let it cool. (If you drop hot eggs into cold water you run the risk of breaking the shells - a lot of people do it anyway, but I wouldn't.)

For a soft-boiled egg, tap the shell all around above the middle with teaspoon, tap tap tap, so that you can remove the top of the shell and eat the egg out of the bottom. Do what you like with hard boiled eggs - I don't like 'em.

Egg : Boiled
Bring eggs up to room temperature and place in a pot.
Run underwater of the hot tap until water runs hot.
Place on oven ring and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and time for 3 minutes.
Plunge under cold water.
They will be firm whites. Runny yolks.
Adjust time according to how you want them.

Note.
Getting a soft boiled egg the way you like, will take dozens of attempts with careful timing.,each time to learn what suits you.
Hard boiled eggs are a piece of cake as they just need to be brought up to the boil and simmered for 5 minutes and drained and plunged into very cold water. There are dozens of way to do that, it is to get it soft boil that matters
