Ask the staff in the supermarket where you can get beans paste. I'm sure there's plenty to choose from. White wines are good in onion soup. Try it. My husband loves it.

Miso - soya bean paste - also used in Chinese and Japanese cooking - most "English" supermarkets in UK stock this sort of thing, so it should not be hard to find in US (but not at Walmart - I just searched there) - just look in the "Oriental" section at you local supermarket - HTH

Mello; depends on what you want, The most common onion soup is french onion soup, it has no Asian ingredients. Here is a recipe from Cordon Bleu (culinary school in Paris) for a Classic french onion soup.

3 Tbs butter
1 1/4 pounds onions sliced thin
3 Tbs all purpose flour
1 cup dry white wine
6 cups of beef or chicken stock
one bay leaf
1 tsp fresh thyme
sat and pepper to taste
6 slices of French baguette Bread
3 oz gruyere cheese, grated, about 3/4 cups

Procedure:

heat butter in large pan over medium heat
add onions until tender and golden (caramelized)
add the flour, cook for 2 or 3 minutes stirring frequently, to get rid of the raw flour taste
add the wine and bring to a boil, then, reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes
gradually wisk in the beef or chicken stock, and the bay leaf and thyme, season to taste with s&p
bring to a boil, stir constantly, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes

toast the bread,

To serve preheat the broiler
ladle soup into the soup bowls, Float the toasted bread on top of each and sprinkle with cheese, and broil until the cheese melts, serve hot

It might sound complicated but it is not.

No matter what you are cooking, you need to read and study the recipy, and have your ingredients ready on hand, (miss en place)
hope this helps, and Good luck
