Just got back from the grocery store...I did have to inform my cashier that I had selected Swiss Chard - however, at my store here in the great state of New Mexico, every cashier knows which of the 8 kinds of chile peppers I have in the bag!
Yes, I do. But then according to my doctor, I am apparently classed as an old person! Most of the students, young adults or even school children working as shelf stackers and cashiers are very uneducated and inexperienced, which is why I always seek out the more mature workers in supermarkets. It sometimes means standing in a longer line at the check-out, but it is worth it for the better service, friendlier manner and eye contact lacking in almost everyone of 30 years of age and less! Grumpy Old Lady? You bet I am... LOL!
The only times I have issues is with herbs. Flat Italian parsely and cilantro look pretty much alike through the bag and they can't read the PLU so they give me that look like "This is......?" and I tell them. I don't even blame the older cashiers since they need to know to keep the line moving and aren't clairvoyant.
Yes, seems like the kids running the checkout have a limited experience with fruits & veggies that are even slightly exotic. I suspect that comes from lack of experience & too many years of McDonald's & pizza. They'll come around as they mature but by that time its unlikely that they will be running the register.
I don't have a problem...everything is coded and has some kind of tag on it..at least it is at the store I shop at: Wegmans (and the cashiers all seem to be well-trained). But I can understand your frustration with them not knowing....(hey, they're young: they're still a work in progress ;)
Now that you mention it, yes. Lately Ive had to tell the cashier what a leek was, before that parsnips and rutabaga...weird. All young people too now that I think of it
Edit LOL the bagger last weekend kept calling a lime, a lemon
no i used wegmanns food store its a chain and they have a wide selection of cheeses, asain products, butcher for meats so sometimes they tell me the new products they have

OMG YES!!! Once I tell them what it is so they can ring it up they also get curious about what it tastes like. This has happened with fennel, leeks, and kumquats.
That rarely happens to me. I guess the cashiers at my store go to their produce meetings!
Really? Never happened to me. I think if they don't know what it is, they just guess.
I WORK AT THE STORE, SO NO I TELL PPL WHERE THINGS ARE
