Take a FoodSafe course too from your local health inspector or college. It should be a one day course with an exam and a certificate. Like knowing CPR it is a good thing.
Watch the food network and check out Bobby Flay, Iron Chef, the Ace of Cakes, Pitching In, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and other nifty shows.

I'd start with choosing a certain cuisine.. then you can slowly develop an idea of different cultures and ingredients they use when cooking. Get a cooking job... always have good quality ingredients and equipment. Cookbooks help but essentially don't make you a cook, they give you a foundation but you need to be creative. Time, effort and patience is definitely needed when starting out but don't quit. If you give me an idea of what you'd like to cook, perhaps I could help a lot...
culinary graduate, been cooking since childhood
I'd suggest a two-prong approach. First, get a copy of Best Recipes: From The Backs Of Boxes, Bottles, Cans And Jars by Ceil Dyer. This uses processed products combined to make pretty good dishes. It will help you build confidence because what you cook will be devoured and admired. Second, watch the food channel and the cooking channel. About half of what they air is crap, and the rest is good instruction. Best teachers (IMHO) are Mark Bittman (starting March 6th on cooking channel), Tyler Florence, Paula Deen and Emeril. Bittman also has a wealth of recipes archived at the New York Times website. Google "New York Times: Mark Bittman".
Good luck!

Serve over bread, potatoes, or pasta, really good and very easy, one of the first things I learned to cook when I was 12 yrs. old.
You have to start by knowing what you want to cook. YOu can then go from there on learning how to. You can start with a cookbook for beginners or think of what you want to eat, research on the ingredients and try to prepare it. I love to cook too and the outcome and feedback of what I make is the most exciting part!
You can try Martha Stewarts Cooking school Cook book. It give a wealthy of info about food and techniques. You can also go to her site She has a lot of cooking school videos that can also help you learn. Check it out: http://www.marthastewart.com/cooking-tec…

lol well i've been cooking since i was 10 so it starts young with parents teaching anyway start off by cooking simple things like pancakes,eggs,cakes,etc once u learned to follow directions ur ready to learn to cook more things like hamburger helper then when ur experienced like me u can cook chicken,fish,pork chops,etc chicken is kinda tricky because ppl always ask how to tell when its done simple stick a fork in it and see if there is any blood if there isnt its done
I would start with a cook book for beginners, or maybe even a kids cookbook. That way the recipes will be simple and then after you try some out you will feel more comfortable making new things. You can also find tons of recipes and how to videos online, just type in "easy recipes" or "easy chicken recipes" "easy beef recipes" whatever it is you want to make and something will come up! good luck!
I learned from tv, while others were watching music shows on Sat I was watching Julia Childs.

You can cheat alittle.... bake a cake from scratch but use store Icing.
Have a can of soup like chicken noodle?, add cooked carrots and peas and chunks of chicken just thicken the soup with some flour and you have chicken stew. Next time you make the sauce.

cook book
Awesome, what about get a cook book? But if you don't want to, check out the internet. Make some good egg and rice for break fast. Hehe, I'll show you another recipe for dessert after this...
1-2 eggs (according to you)
rice, cooked rice
sweet soy sauce (or brand called BANGO, my favorite!)
First, you heat a small pan, put some oil, just a tablespoon, when it is heated, put the egg inside, with its shell already cracked of course :p. Then, just scrabble the egg all around the pan, when it is ready, the egg should look yellow. put a rice in a bowl, then put the egg. Take your sweet soy sauce and pour a lot on top, scrabble the rice and all... it should smell BEAUTIFUL!!

Eggnog ice cream
Ingredient
* 2 cups eggnog
* 2 cups heavy cream
* 1 (10 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, or to taste
Directions
1. Mix eggnog, heavy cream, condensed milk, and vanilla in a large bowl. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's directions until it reaches "soft-serve" consistency. Transfer ice cream to a one- or two-quart lidded plastic container; cover surface with plastic wrap and seal. For best results, ice cream should ripen in the freezer for at least 2 hours or overnight.
I got that from a site listed below.

Super easy Milkshake ( Got this from myself :P)
1-2 scoops ice cream of any flavor (if you pick strawberry ice cream or peach or any fruit ice cream, add some fruit pieces to make it extra special and good!)
Blender of course :D
1 cup of milk (you could add a 1/4 cup more)
2 tablespoon of...*SUGAR* :D
First you need to get your blender ready, plug it in... then, put in your ice cream scoops and fruit slices (if you have) and after that, your going to pour your milk, put the sugar in the blender too. Then stir for about 20 seconds, that way, you could still taste the ice cream YUM!
GOOD LUCK :D
