What is this kitchen appliance called?!

Question: What is this kitchen appliance called?
Hi, I'm trying to translate a French recipe into English. The recipe requires the use of a "mixeur plongeant". I know what one looks like and is used for, but I don't know what it's called in English, and none of my dictionaries or other sources seem to have a good answer.

The "mixeur plongeant" is a sort of hand mixer whose metal thing you put into the bottom of a liquid mixture in order to emulsify it. If you need an image, please google this name in French, or you can go to this link :http://www.google.fr/imgres?imgurl=http:…

Does anyone know what this is called in English?

Thanks/Merci!

It is called an immersion blender and is a very handy tool to have. The alternative if you do not have an immersion blender is to puree your mixture in batches in a blender or food processor.

That item is better known as a hand-held mixer, one that is usually plunged (ergo "plongeant/Plunged) into the liquid. The blades are short and sharp, usually best suited to liquids and soft foods.

It is often called a Stick Blender. Or hand held stick blender. Don't use it for mashing potatoes as it makes them gluey.
