Question: I am a cookie dough addict, is it really bad for you to eat it raw.?
Is there a non egg cookie dough that is as tasty as the egg versions.

If you have any condition which can weaken your immune system (HIV, Hepatitis C, cancer, pregnancy, chronic steroid use, chemotherapy, Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc.), you should avoid all foods which contain raw eggs. If you have a healthy immune system, you can still get seriosuly ill from Salmonella.
Here in the US, the FDA and USDA do an absolutely ATROCIOUS job of protecting our food supply, relying on technology that is at least 75 years out of date. If you lived in Europe, especially in "civilized" areas like Scandinavia, where they actually use modern technology to protect the food supply, this would be a total non-issue and you could drink gallons of raw eggs without any risk whatsoever.
This being the backwards U.S. of A., I would stick with cookie dough made from pasteurized whole eggs (you can find them in most larger supermarkets nowadays), or Egg-Beaters. You won't notice the difference with Egg-Beaters (I'm picky about my cookie-dough, and I can't tell the difference!).
If you're buying commercially-made cookie dough, you're probably safe, but read the label. If they're not using pasteurized eggs, there will be some disclaimer on the label warning you not to eat it raw.

Raw egg usually won't hurt you as eggs very rarely contain any infectious bacteria inside them. The problem of getting sick from salmonella arises when bacteria from the outside of the shell gets into the food (egg drizzling over the shells or pieces of shell getting into the food). If you wash the eggs before cracking them and remove the bacteria you can eat raw egg all day long without getting sick (although your cholesterol may be a bit high).

You can use pasteurized egg yolks and egg whites (comes in cartons) to make sure that the dough is safe to eat. There is an extremely low chance of getting salmonella from eating raw eggs. You will probably get a stomach ache and diarrhea but the chance for that is also low - only if you consume enough raw dough.

Yes, if you eat anything with raw egg in it, there is a very real possibility that you could get a number of serious illnesses associated with the microbes growing within the raw egg. I would avoid eating raw cookie dough unless you try vegan options. There are some really tasty cookie dough options that you can make yourself, which don't contain egg and would be completely safe. Check them out.

Everyone is susceptible to salmonella, which raw eggs can carry. So it's best not to eat anything with raw eggs in it.

And there are microscopic holes in the surface of egg shells, and salmonella can get into the egg through these.

I agree with the second answerer. Use egg beaters brand, or maybe you can find powdered egg substitute to use instead.

I"m 45 years old, and for as far back as I can remember I have always eaten raw cookie dough, which contained eggs. I still eat the raw dough, and I also gave it to all my children as they were growing up, and now my grandkids. We are all fine. They also get to lick the beaters and the bowls and spoons when we make cakes, brownies, anything.

You can use dried eggs or uhmmm I think you call it sterilized? Or eggs that have 4 weeks left on the best before date. Any later and you risk salmonella.
Also be careful with stuff with too many rising agents - might give you a tummy ache.

Yum ;) Good luck!

It's absolutely fine to eat raw cookie dough, as raw egg isn't particularly dangerous (unless you're susceptible to salmonella).

yes because theres eggs in it and raw eggs can cause e coli bacteria
