Why is french onion soup called that?!

Question: Why is french onion soup called that?
Where do they get the 'French'?

Answers:

It really depends on what article you read..Some say France that the recipe originated with the canuts. ..some say it dates back to the Greek and Roman times......Onion soup recipes are found in old English cookbooks and in colonial American cookbooks....

So take your pick.........

Soups evolved thousands of years ago according to local tastes and available ingredients. Italian minestrone, French onion, Spanish gazpacho, Chinese Won Ton, and Russian borscht are all types of soup, which are famous all over the world but very different in flavor and style....

Hope this helps..........
