Where can I buy coconut oil?!

Question: Where can I buy coconut oil?
I tried googling it and didn't find a very good answer. A friend recommended coconut oil for cooking I was wondering where to buy some? I dont live very close to farmers markets or anything and was wondering where I can get some? any suggestions would be nice! thanks!

Answers:

I have never seen coconut oil at a farmer's market. My local farmers aren't able to grow coconut palm trees, so they don't make or sell coconut oil. So don't worry about not being able to get to a farmer's market!

You can buy coconut oil in almost any major grocery store. Try your local supermarket. Look near the other cooking oils, but also look in ethnic foods - either the Asian or Latin sections.

Also definitely look in your local Asian market.

If you have a health food store or natural foods store nearby, they will definitely have it. If you don't see it with other cooking oils, it may be in the supplement section instead. Ask an employee. Whole Foods carries coconut oil in both the cooking oil and the supplement sections.

It will probably be cheapest at an Asian market, and second cheapest at Whole Foods, if you buy the 365 brand, which is their house generic brand.

You can also buy it online. Here is one brand:

Important: The container for the coconut oil will not look the same as the bottles you find olive oil in! It is completely different. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so it is in a jar, not a bottle. You use a spoon to scoop the oil out of the jar. Sometimes it is a plastic jar, and sometimes it is glass. Sometimes the container is clear, and you can see the whitish or off-white coconut oil inside; other times it is opaque. One brand has a dark brown opaque plastic jar with a picture of a coconut on the label. Whatever brand you get, the jar is usually similar to the shape of the one pound nut butter jars, if that makes sense.

I love coconut oil!

A natural food store would be your best bet, keep in mind that it might be packaged differently and you might miss it, so you should ask someone who works on the floor if they carry it,

I have used coconut oil in cooking and I have to say that it tastes very strongly of coconut (duh)... It overpowered the food that I cooked it in and I didn't really like it. It might have been the type or brand that I got but I thought I should give you a fair warning as some of us don't like our foods to taste coconutty.

Many (not all) doctors recommend not to use coconut oil. It has the highest saturated fat content of just about any cooking oil. Check out ehow or wiki for more info. Many have stopped using it and prefer canola or olive oil. If you have people with cholesterol or weight problems - be careful.

Farmer's Markets won't have it.

Whole Foods is your best bet as I know they carry it. If you have any other natural food store around, they probably have it too.

Major food stores

Health food stores
