Do I need some kind of baking machine? If so, where can I find one? Are they expensive?

Answers:

I assume you mean hard shell tacos.

They're easy. There are several ways, depending on what you have or want to buy.

You can make your own tortillas, or just buy good quality ones at the grocery.

One way: You heat about 5-6 inches of vegetable or canola oil in a heavy pan to 375 degrees. Fold the tortilla in half, hold it by the open side with long tongs, and lower it into the hot oil very carefully. Hold it under the oil until it holds its shape, then drain it upside down over dowels or skewers on a rack. Salt lightly as soon as it comes out of the oil.

Another way: if you have a deep fryer at home, use it. You can go to any restaurant supply store and buy a two peice taco shell rack that you lay the tortillas in, then put the top peice on, drop into the oil, and it cooks multiple ones without having to hold them individually.

Another way: heat just a few inches of oil in a flat heavy skillet. Put the toritlla in flat, and let it fry until it's crisping up but still pliable, then hang over the dowels or rack of knives to make the shape.

Here's Alton Brown's take on it, if I'm not explaining it right:

There is a tortilla press but if you are making corn tortillas you can use a rolling pin. Take a golf ball size ball of dough and roll it to about 1/4" thickness and brown in dry skillet. It will brown quickly so turn before it burns. I haven't made flour tortillas but I would imagine the process is the same.
