Agave nectar is a 100% vegan sweetener. It's promoted as a natural sweetener but the nectar is actually more processed than honey, though less than high-fructose corn syrup. I don't find that it has a very distinct flavor but is it a lot sweeter that refined white suger. Pretty neutral/bland taste with a smooth consistency. Some people have said it leaves an aftertaste described as licorice-like.

Substitute maple syrup, brown rice syrup, or sorghum syrup for the agave. Also, if you are not vegan you can substitute honey for the agave.

It does, but you can still sub Splenda or a Splenda blend for it. However, if you're diabetic, be aware that agave nectar is rated half as high as white sugar on the glycemic index scale.

But if you're just looking for low-cal, Splenda is your best pick.

aloe vera nectar!
