Do you put frosting on a cake before fondant?!

Question: Do you put frosting on a cake before fondant?
I'm baking a cake and I wanted to put fondant over it instead of frosting. So, do you put frosting on the cake then the fondant so it will stick better? Or do you just put the fondant straight on?
Thankk you!

I am pretty sure when I done it we just put the fondant on it. It's been a while so I don't remember for sure. But I am pretty sure we didnt put any frosting on it first. Good luck.

To get the fondant to stick, you should brush the cake with either a lightly beaten egg white or with jam. I think if you're in America your jam is more jelly like, so I would probably heat it or something first so that it was easier to brush on...

When I have used fondant in the past, I have normally put a layer of marzipan under the frosting (but it's not that necessary). If you do this you should use the above wash both to get the marzipan to stick and then on the marzipan to get the fondant to stick.

You can use just a glaze of melted jelly, but a lot of people don't like the taste of fondant so putting a layer of buttercream under it will still leave them with some frosting to eat with their cake. That's the way i do it.

You can put the fondant straight on the cake, however fondant is quite thin and dry, so it is usually better to put a layer of frosting on the cake first, then put the fondant on top.

yes. Generally you do use a base coat of frosting but something like a thin coat of seedless raspberry preserves is also good.
