It depends on the pilaf. It could be wild rice, toasted orzo or vermicelli (which are types of pasta), or even some sort of wheat berry or other grain.

In my experience, wild rice & orzo are the most common. If it's long, thin, slightly hard, and very dark brown, it's wild rice. If it's golden brown and slightly football-shaped, it's orzo.



It's small pasta, lightly toasted. The type of pasta is called Orzo. It's a rice-shaped pasta, but a little plumper around the middle.
