I need help with a recipe for king cake icing?!

Question: I need help with a recipe for king cake icing?
King cake icing vs cinnamon roll icing?
Im trying to make king cake icing. i used a few different recipes...
ONE was water and powdered sugar
the SECOND one was milk and powdered sugar
the THIRD was milk, butter, cinnamon, vanilla and powdered sugar

I really though the third one would work but all three of them had this very bad taste to it. Like it was bland or missing something or something, I was told cinnamon roll icing was the same so I looked it up and the recipes were the same.

I dont know why its coming out so yucky. Am I doing something wrong. I tasted the canned icing from pillsbury and it takes so good, not like mine.
What am I missing? Need help. Making cupcakes and they want that icing on top. ITs due today. THanks

you could try adding more vanilla but the recipes you are working with are classic simply icings.
The only difference would be an added flavor.
It could be that you normally don't make icing and always use the canned stuff and are simply used to that flavor but for old ladies like me who has either eaten or made her own icing for so long, that canned tastes nasty to me and I prefer the homemade.
Have you tried a cream cheese icing? that has a different flavor and might suit you more.
An icing is an addition and does not need to carry the flavor of the dessert, it only needs to enhance it.

3 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 - 6 teaspoons water
Combine sugar, lemon juice and 3 teaspoons water until smooth. If icing is too stiff, add more water until spreadable. Spread icing over top of cake. Immediately sprinkle the colored sugars in individual rows consisting of about 2 rows of green, purple and yellow. Cake is served in 2" - 3" pieces.
