Whole Cooked ham.....What to do with it now that's not beans or chili?!
Answers:
Lightly brown slices in skillet & a bit of oil. Take out & make gravy with the drippings. I am from the south, & we love gravy & biscuits. You can make milk gravy (like we do in the south a lot) or you can make red eye gravy. Talk about good eating ! Also, you can use the ham hock for seasoning in a big pot of beans, on a later date. I'm making myself hungry..
Lots of years of country cooking. Like around 40+ yrs.
I shave it very thin, put into a baggy, and use it for sandwiches. It is also good for a ham snack while watching TV in the evening.
Ham slices to lightly fry and serve with canned sweet potatoes and a vegetable.
Fried ham slices with eggs and toast is good for morning breakfast or dinner. You can also cook up some hash brown potatoes.
Ham paté
Ingredients
2 cups chopped leftover ham
1/2 cup real mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
3 teaspoons dry Sherry
Freshly ground black pepper
Method
Add ham to the bowl of a food processor and pulse to a coarse chop. Add the rest of the ingredients and purée until smooth.
Scrap into a gratin or ramekin or shallow dish, cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight.
Serve ham paté with toast points, saltines, or your favorite crackers.
Cut the ham into cubes. Stir fry onions and mushrooms lightly, add the ham and add a can of condensed chicken soup (Campbells in the UK), cook for about 5 minutes and set aside. Meanwhile make a pie dish with shortcrust pastry (shop bought if you want to cheat), chill, and then add the filling, brush the top with egg-wash and bake. Works well with fresh vegetables or salad. Enjoy.
Sometimes we have breakfast for dinner and ham and eggs is one of my favorites(I fry the ham up very well done sort of like crispy bacon)
You can also make a sort of pasta primavera (sp) and use ham instead of bacon
Saute peppers- I like to use a mixture of red, yellow and green, and onions in olive oil until onions are translucent and add ham cut in strips. Season with herbs and add a bit of vegetable or chicken broth. Serve over pasta- delicious!
Add it in to scalloped potatoes au gratin. Dice up the rest, portion it up and freeze it so you have ham on demand for split pea soup or any time you need ham.
Warm it up. make mashed potatoes, and green beans(or any other green). Serve breakfast, including pancakes or biscuits. Could always make hash using ham instead of corn beef for meat.
Mix it with macaroni and cheese
Grind it and make ham salad
Use some to make split pea soup
Ham biscuits
Ham and cheese omelets
