Answers:

For the energy rating, and "which is best" - go to a consumer evaluation site. They have the facts.
I would suggest you prepare to spend some money for a quality name, like Cuisinart, or Krups or such. As to what can be cooked that way? Virtually any piece of meat will benefit from a long slow cooking with aromatic ingredients around it. Most any brand will come with some sort of recipe book. I am a chef, and one of my favorite books is "Best Slow Cooker Cookbook Ever"
Good luck - you'll be glad you bought one.

Buy the best one you can afford. Sometimes the really cheap ones don't heat evenly enough. They save on energy a lot. There is usually a cookbook inside but thousands of recipes can be found online.
The can cook just about anything from roasts, chicken, vegetables and even desserts.

check out this blog it is great:

lots of great recipes

I just got my first crock pot this Christmas, it a 20$ one from Walmart, but have been cooking for 30 years and I love the pot the only complaint I have is everything is so moist that I have to thicken the "gravy" in almost every dish. Its fine but I would like something without gravy for dinner. I am still experimenting so it will take some time I'm sure. Enjoy your pot..good luck

Check with Consumer Reports. I use a crock a dial. Not even sure they make that brand anymore. I've had it for over 20 years and it is super for my needs.
