How to put fondant on a cake?!

Question: How to put fondant on a cake?
I'm making a cake and I'm going to use fondant but I want to know if I just place it on top or if i need to put something between the cake and the fondant like icing or frosting. And if I do which do you recommend?

Answers:

If you are using a rolled fondant, you should put a thin layer of frosting/icing (buttercream is good) on the cake first to make the fondant stick to the cake. If you are doing a poured fondant you don't need any thing under it.

I had no idea what I was doing when it came to decorating a cake nor at the time did I know what fondant is until I came across what I think is one of the best collections of information available. Cakes, cupcakes, candies... it's all here.

If you're like me, I thought I could never bake and decorate something like a wedding cake but right before the end of the year, my niece was getting married on a shoe-string budget and I volunteered to provide the cake.

Since my niece and her now husband are in the military, I did a cake in a Go Army theme which to my surprise looked great and tasted even better. A lot of fun and easier then I ever imaged it to be.

Happy baking and decorating!

I put some apricot jam over the cake to allow it to stick strawberry jam is good as well, Heat the jam a little so it spreads easier
