Is frosting able to go bad?!

Question: Is frosting able to go bad?
Alright so I just made a cake for my boyfriend's birthday, and I wanted to frost it. But the only frosting in my house is from a while back. And I was wondering if it would still be okay to use. It tastes fine and spreads easily and doesn't smell nasty.
What do you think?

I don't think so. Stuff like that doesn't usually go bad. I think they just put the date on there because they have to comply with federal law. If it tastes fine, then it's fine.

It would depend on what's in it. If there are eggs, milk, or butter in it, which many types of frosting contain, it can most definitely go bad. If it's a primarily a water and corn syrup or sugar-based frosting, it will go bad eventually, but it has a fairly long shelf-life.

If in doubt, you could always make frosting. It's not that hard... a buttercream is very simple to make.

Then you can use it. Sugar is an amazing preservative and won't go bad for a long time. But with store bought icing, it will eventually dry out. If it's spreads and tastes fine, your good.

If it's canned or boxed, it should be fine. If it's homemade with dairy in it, I'd toss it. Dairy products (butter, milk, eggs) can go off.

It's passed all the usual tests... it's probably fine. Sugar is a natural preservative, and canned frostings don't use butter.
