Can I use a conventional oven to make shank-n-bake chicken and pork chops?!

Question: Can I use a conventional oven to make shank-n-bake chicken and pork chops?
Our stove went out the other day, so I was wondering, can you cook things like that in a conventional oven? The thought never crossed my mind until it went out, and well, today I am headed to the store, finally!

Answers:

Absolutely, regardless of your heat source other than liquid based (like:boiling, braising, steaming or poaching, you are all set to go. Go ahead and prepare the chicken & pork chops as you normally would then place on either and oiled baking pan or broiler pan. Also, while you're at it, you might as well use the residual heat of the oven to make the rest of your meal to save yourself time & energy. I presume the temp. of your oven to be between 375 - 400 degrees max.

In another pan you could add in other things like:

-Asparagus tips (Drizzled with olive oil, sea salt & fresh cracked pepper) Bake: x10 min.

-Apple stuffing (Dice up some green apples finely and add it to prepared stuffing mix. Place the stuffing in an oiled baking dish-ready for baking) Bake: x20-30 min.

-Butternut squash (Cut into small cubes & drizzled with olive oil, sea salt & fresh cracked pepper. Since this might take a while to bake (30-45 min.) you might want to start this first and then during the last 15-20 min. add in your chicken or pork chops to the oven to bake)

-Spaghetti squash (Cut in half, lengthwise & drizzled with olive oil, sea salt & fresh cracked pepper. Same as above... since this might take a while to bake (30-45 min.) you might want to start this first and then during the last 15-20 min. add in your chicken or pork chops to the oven to bake)

-Root vegetables: Carrots, onions, turnips, parsnips, beets (Thinly sliced, then drizzled with olive oil, sea salt & fresh cracked pepper) Bake: x30 min.

-Red/white or Yukon Gold potatoes: Diced into 1" cubes, drizzled with olive oil, sea salt & fresh cracked pepper. Then add in freshly chopped garlic cloves and 1/2 tsp. of finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves) Bake: x30min.

-Twice baked potatoes-While your pork chops are prepped and set aside, place 4 large potatoes (sliced in half) on a baking sheet. Brush with oil -top and bottom. Bake until slightly tender. Bake:x20 min. Remove them from the oven and using an oven mitt so you don't get burned, scoop out the centers of the potato halves iinto a large bowl. Set the potato shells/skins back on the baking sheet. Add to the potato mixture in the bowl, some shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon and chopped green onions. Scoop the potato mixture back into the potato shells and proceed to Bake:x15 min. At this point you can add in your tray of chicken or porkchops.

Dessert:
As your tray of chicken or porkchops is finishing, core out 4 apples, leaving the bottom in place so the filling doesn't fall out. Where the core used to be, add in a premade mixture of crumbled ginger snaps or oatmeal cookies, room temp butter, raisins and walnut pieces. Wrap each apple in a small sheet of foil or place in cup cake papers. Add them into the oven while you are eating dinner. Turn off the heat completely and shut the door. Do not open for at least 30 min. You are using up the rest of the residual heat. Then, when you are ready for dessert, bring out the apples and serve with some vanilla bean ice cream.

Enjoy!

shake n bake usually has instructions for conventional oven rather than convection, but yes, you can do it in convection or toaster oven. Cut baking time in half for convection or double it if you are going the other way. Toaster oven use conventional oven instructions. it just makes smaller batches.

I thought the directions on the box say to cook in oven. I don't use those mixes but I don't see why you couldn't cook them in the oven.
