What is shortening used for in muffins?!

Question: What is shortening used for in muffins?
Okay, I'm trying to make a batch of muffins and the recipe says it needs shortening. I don't know ehat shortening is and I don't think we have it at our house. Is it possilble to make the muffins (from scratch) without shortening? This is my first time, thanks!

Answers:

Shortening is a semi-solid, plant-derived fat which can be used in place of butter, margarine, or other fats when cooking or baking. For your muffins its fine to replace with margarine because its made from oil, or if you have no margarine, use butter, just make sure its in the form recipe calls for, solid or melted. :)

no if your doing it from scratch it will take shorting crisco...
