Is it weird to serve chili as a meal at a party?!

Question: Is it weird to serve chili as a meal at a party?
Im having a birthday party for my daughter (shes turning one). its a cowgirl/western theme so i though i could serve chili with cornbread and potato salad but my sisters say chili is a side and i should serve a "main" course...they say the chili wont be filling but i think it would be really cute. what do think? im also gonna corndogs mostly for the kids but adults can have them as well...and i dont want to do brisket or pork ribs..

Im posting this questions everywhere just to get a go range of ppl :)

and what do you recommend for those not wanting chili?
i am planning on giving add-on for those who want it ( sour cream, onion, hot sauce, crackers, cheese, chives etc)

Answers:

I don't know what kind of half hearted chili your sisters make but chili is usually really filling. I am also partial to chili so I might be biased.

I've done many functions where the combination was chili & chowder. it's been used for birthday parties, sleigh/hay rides, wedding receptions, etc.

I said this earlier & it didn't post. I would serve roasted red potatoes instead of potato salad. that way people also have the option of a baked potato bar to go with your chili using the same ingredients.

Not at all, chili is not only filling but pretty tasty, and a great main course with sides. I'd do bake potatoes instead of potato salad. The corn dogs are fine for anyone not wanting chili. Sounds like a great party ... have fun.

It's a great idea, chili is quite filling when made well. Especially with cornbread and potato salad, you're all set. Your friends must be eating some sissy-fied chili.

Chili is a main dish. We serve it with corn bread and sometimes condiments such as chopped onion, and grated cheddar cheese or diced avocado.

I think chili is a good idea. I would serve burgers as well. Some people don't like chili and some like chili and burgers and would even put chili on their burgers.

Chili is freaking amazing- give those who despise it poisoned lettus

No, you are very creative for this. This is a good choice!

Tell your sisters to mind their business.

That sounds like a GREAT idea, since your doing the cowgirl western theme!!

I think your party sounds wonderful! I have been served menus like this at a party before.

You may want to make mac and cheese for the kids though. Goes well with corn dogs.

I guess your sisters have never been to a "TEXAS" chili cookoff have they?
Chili is the star of the day...

I love chili... its very filling... mmmm with yummy hot cornbread... and I love potato salad.. I want to come to your party.. sheesh!.. tell your sisters to get lost.. more yummy food for you!.....

I can remember at school when I was little.. we had chili pie day once a month.. we all looked forward to this..

the canteen ladies would slice open a single pack of fritoes corn chips on our plate, and ladel a huge spoon of chili on top of the corn chips.. and we could thenhave toppings added to our choice, like grated chedder cheese, sour cream, diced onions, mustard, salsa... (of course I being the ever chili lover, made a mountain out of all of it..) OH. those were the days.. so yummy.....
