Melomakarona are a very popular sweet treat in Greece during Christmas. They are small cookies soaked in a honey-sugar syrup. They are vegan and are considered to be a very healthy choice for dessert as they contain good fats from the olive oil and the walnuts. If you visit Greece on Xmas, you will find them everywhere. They are easy and simple to make. This is a typical recipe.
for the cookies:
250 ml olive oil
100 gram sugar
5 tbsp coniac
300 ml orange juice
1 ts baking powder
300 gram semolina (fine)
400 gram flour
300 gram chopped walnuts
for the syrup:
200 gram honey
200 gram sugar
200 ml water
lemon and orange zest
cinnamon stick
Preparation:
You begin by mixing the olive oil with the sugar and the orange juice. You then blend half of the flour with the baking powder and then you mix the flower mixture with the wet mix. You add the semolina and mix well.
This should result in wet thick dough. Now you have to knead the remaining flower into the mixture until you have a steady, non sticky gough. You let it rest for 30 minutes under a towel.
Now you can form the little oval cookies that look like a tiny turtle.
Place them onto baking paper on a tray.
Bake the cookies in the preheated oven at 180 degrees centigrade for 20-25 minutes and then let them cool down.
Add all the syrup ingredients into a small pot and let them simmer for a few minutes.
Dip the cookies into the syrup and let them soak for a couple of minutes. Then place them on a roasting tray.
Its is important to have the cookies in room temperature when you add the hot syrup.
Let the melomakarona sit on the roasting tray over night in order to soak the syrup.
Be careful because if you let the cookies sit for a long time in the syrup they get soggy.
Place the melomakarona in a clean plate or tray and sprinkle some crushed wallnuts over them.
You can keep them in room temperature for about a week and in the fridge for quite longer.
Enjoy!
