It takes 6 minutes total. If it is a larger potato it will take longer.

Before placing a potato in the microwave, be sure to poke it with a fork several times to lessen the possibility of an exploding potato.
Bake it on high for 4 minutes for a small potato, 6 minutes for a large potato. Check the potato after 3, 4, 5 or 6 minutes. It can easily overcook and be "rubbery."

A lot of microwaves have a baked potato button! Check your microwave for that first. You can program it for how many potatoes you have. Generally though, about 5 minutes for a an average sized potato. Make sure you poke holes in it to vent though, so it doesn't explode!
