tempura batter substitute?!

Question: Tempura batter substitute?
i have this recipe for a tempura batter

* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 tablespoons baking powder
* 1/4 cup cornstarch (preferred), or sweet potato starch, or panko-Japanese bread crumb
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 2 eggs, slightly beaten
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1-1/2 cups ice-cold water

but i dont have cornstarch , sweet potato starch or the japanese crumbs. Do i really need these? could i use just regular bread crumbs?

Cornstarch is a thicking agent. So you could just add 1/4 cup more flour or you could use dry bread crumbs as this would give it more texture. Hope this helps!

I have never heard of sweet potato starch. And panko would really not work in my opinion.

If you have rice flour that would be even better.
