I have done the pour-while-tacky and not fully set trick and never works IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. I always let my first layer cool completely then pour the second layer, still piping hot, on top. when you do the layer with strawberries, though, you have to wait til it starts to set to add the berries or they won't stay suspended in the Jell-o, they'll just float (or sink, can't remember which lol).
Make your first layer and put it into the mold, then into the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Take it out and then add your next layer, pop it into the freezer, then add your last layer. There are directions for a faster set on the jello box which instruct you to use ice water-- use this method to make those layers set faster in between pours. Good luck!
You pour the second layer when the top of the first is tacky to the touch, before it's totally firm, but not so soft that they'll mix together.
